The red tablets show where bacterial plaque remains on teeth. Bacterial plaque is composed of various bacterial species. To test for specific bacteria, strep mutans for example, saliva or plaque must be collected and tested in a lab. Everyone, with teeth, has s. mutans in the oral cavity, the lab test can tell how large the concentration is compared to the other bacteria and how many CFU's (colony forming units) of s. mutans were detected.
