I'd like to think Dick Dastardly went into a beautiful, neighborhood pound... to blackmail money out of it. While he was getting his payoff, Muttley happened to be surrounding the place with dynamite. Dick Dastardly steps out right as the place explodes. They both hop in his car and have been together ever since.
