How do you throw a perfect football spiral?

[Edit]

Throwing a Football Spiral

The keys to throwing a perfect spiral every time are: Your hand positioning, your release, and your timing.

Hold the ball with your ring-finger just in front of the last lace on the football, leave an empty space, and place your pinky finger between the next two laces.

Your non-dominant hand should accompany your dominant hand on the ball as you raise it to throw, but you should drop it away from the ball and let it swing out away from your body as you twist your torso to throw.

Squeeze the ball hard just before you throw it, and then flick your wrist downward as you let go. This will ensure a tight spiral every time.

Here is more input and advice:

  • Your hands being too small is no excuse for not being able to throw a spiral. I'm 5'2" with a size 8 glove, and taught my 4'10" ex-fiancee to throw a tight spiral as well. Go get 'em.

  • Just click you're wrist down when you throw it

  • I have been playing QB for a while. If your hand is small put your ring on the first slot and your pinky on the third. If your hand is larger like mine put your ring on the second slot and your pinky on the fourth.Cuff the ball with your left hand and then with your throwing hand bring the ball up to and behind your ear. Then release the ball in a forward motion and follow through.Following through is very very important if you do not do this you will have no spiral. After following through your palm should face downwords on your opposite leg.

  • Just line your fingers on the laces and flick your wrist when throwing.

  • I usually throw a football with fingers on 2 and 5, but after watching mike vick he uses 1 and 4. I'm 15 and got 9 and half inch hands so its easy to get the football flung off, but the hard part i find is throwing a perfect spiral at 45 degrees to get more length. Fling your wrist in coordination with your elbow fling.

  • I manage to make the ball spiral and I put my middle finger on the first lace my ring on the 3 and my pinky just of the 5th.

Tips From Quarterback Graham Harrell: BY: Graham Harrell www.SIKIDS.com

TIP 1: Get a grip: you want to hold the ball in your throwing hand, keep your pointer finger near the back of the ball, your index finger in the middle of the ball, and your ring and pinky finger in the middle of the laces. you wanna hold the ball near your ear, your off hand is going to be on the back of the ball for support and your feet are going to be a little wider than shoulder width apart.

Tip 2: step lightly: only take about a six inch step when you start your throwing motion. you want to avoid taking too much of a stride. Bring your arm straight up as you start your throwing motion so you dont wind up. your throwing arm must be a little higher than your shoulder so your arm almost makes a backwards L with the bottom of the L pointed down slightly.

Tip 3: thumb in pocket. Key to the spiral is the release. YOU WANT TO FLICK YOUR WRIST as you let go of the ball bringing your arm all the way across your body. The way i think about it, is putting your throwing thumb in your opposite pocket. This naturally flicks your hands down, and the last finger that the ball should roll off the thumb is your pointer finger. THE last thing you would want to do is throw with all arm. You want to bring your left side out of the way, this naturally brings your arm across your body, you flick your wrist down, this will save your arm and make you throw a better spiral.

If you follow these 3 tips it will improve your game. But remember, the most important tip,....is to have fun. :D

GO GET EM'!

There is a common misconception in throwing a football, is release. People will generally tell you to spin the ball with your fingers, or let it roll of your fingers. That is wrong, and it may help you get a spiral, but not a great one. It's not what your supposed to do. The flick of the wrist downward is the key to throwing a football.
