All you need is an account with an online broker. There are many choices for a full service broker. Basically, you open an account and then fund it (send them money). You can open an individual account, an IRA/Roth IRA, or even transfer the accounts from a more traditional broker. Stay away from "big name" firms like American Express's brokerage, Scottrade, etc, if you really want to trade actively (high transaction fees, limited functionality, and limits on types of transactions you can perform). Also, some of those types of services/brokerage accounts may only allow you to trade mutual funds or limit you to simple stock buys and sells (these are called "trading levels") - if you EVER may want to get into even basic options, such as a simple covered call, or credit/debit spread, you need a broker who will allow such things. If you feel uncomfortable or overwhelmed with the idea of trading stocks online or looking for a little education before you start trading.
