It really depends on what you want to train them for. If you want them to stop pooping on you then just do this and see if they get the idea : Every time your pet rat poops on you, put him ( or her ) back his ( or her ) cage for 10 minutes. ( this also works for peeing) Then take him ( or her ) back out. Then he ( or she ) will get that you don't liked to be pooped ( or peed ) on and he ( or she ) will stop. ( trust me,I have 2 rats so i would know)

It would be unfair to the rat so just stick with your cats. unless you kept the rat really safe and secure, in a different room, i would get a rat, because rats are totally worth it... you can train them, and all sorts of things. My rat will let me hold it like a baby, and it climbs off its cage onto the floor sometimes!!! lol. Rats are very fun and they are only like 5 dollars!
