On the parisian metro map appear dot lines, those are walking ways between some RER stations and Metro Stations

The one between Gare du Nord and Poissonière is about a 10 minutes walk.

It is indicated because it is faster to use the pedestrian way than to change at gare the l'Est to take the line n° 7.

There is also an technical reason : a single ticket is only availaible if you remain in the metro area. The changes (called correspondances in French) are to be made only inside the subway. If you leave it and re-enter the metro, you will be obliged to use another ticket. The access doors would not opene if you try to get in the station with your used ticket.

In the case of those dot lines, the traveller is allowed to make the change by going out of the gare du nord to reach poissonière on foot as if he has remained inside the subway. The tripods access doors will accept the ticket again.

Another case you may meet as a tourist is the connexions between Orsay Station (RER C indicated in yellow on maps) and Metro Stations Assemblée Nationale and Solferino, those both stations are on line 12.

If you're OK with rolling your baggage on streets, making those trips on foot rather

than changing train lines will get you there in the same time or faster than the Metro.
