There are various methods and products you can make use of for tick and flea removal:

* Flea combs * Sprays * Shampoos * Collars * Oral products or medication

I also found a great read on www.petshed.com discussing tick and flea prevention. It is very informative and quite fun to read, too. Look for the link in this answer - the title is "Top 10 Tips for a Tick-Free Spring Season"

More advice from the WikiAnswers community...

* My favorite product for fleas and ticks is Front line Plus. It must be applied monthly for control of ticks, and every 3 months just for fleas. * If you are in a desert area you may not need flea medications being the fleas can't survive in dry hot climates. * You can phone your vet for this information totally free. * I have used Program for several years. It comes in small tubes. You cut off the end and pull back the hair between the cat or dog's shoulder blades and place it on their skin and do not rub in. This should be repeated every three to four months. Humans also can bring fleas into the home just from walking on grass. * Vacuuming every two days when there is a flea outbreak is wise and get into those corners of the room as well as these are where the fleas hide out. Put a flea collar into the bag of vacuum. * Vets highly recommend several varieties of flea control and it's best to discuss this matter with them. The labeling on these products may not tell you all you need to know about them. I have found 'Program' to be very affective and very safe on my pets.

For ticks, wear latex gloves. Ticks can carry diseases transmittable to humans. Gently, but firmly grasp the tick and pull it straight out. Do not twist the tick. Do not apply a match to the tick or soak it in alcohol. The tick cannot disengage no matter how much she might want to and if you succeed in killing it while it is still embedded, the likelihood of some parts breaking off while you pull it out increase. Once removed, the tick can be dropped into an old pop bottle with alcohol in it and the cap securely screwed back on. This will kill it. Do not flush it down the toilet. They can literally crawl back up and escape from toilets to bite again.

Use a tick repellent medication or collar to prevent or at least reduce future episodes.

Fleas are harder to deal with. Wash the dog in a flea shampoo or dish detergent. Be aware that dish detergent is hard on the dog's coat and will strip the natural oils, but it's great at binding to the fleas so they wash down the drain and drown. Start at the dog's neck with a band of shampoo. If you start lower, the fleas will attempt to escape by crawling on the dog's face, which is more difficult to wash. Apply more shampoo working systematically down the dog and covering his whole body. Rinse and repeat.

Apply a flea preventative according to package directions. Frontline has for years been the brand of choice, but many are reporting it is no longer effective. Try Advantage instead.

Now you have to treat the home because fleas only spend part of their time on your pet. Completely clean your home of dog hair and dander. Wash your dog's bedding. Apply a flea spray that kills both larva and eggs. Your vet can recommend the appropriate product.

Apply a barrier or diatomaceous Earth around your home. Fleas cannot cross this barrier on their own so once this barrier is down they can only enter on you or your dog, which has been treated against fleas. They are sneaky, determined little pests. So expect an all-out war.

I am not sure if it is the best thing but I use Off.

There are many products, Advantage/Sentinel/Hartz Mountain.

Off is not recommended as it will be licked off by your dog and is poisonous.

If nothing else is available, you can sprinkle 1 teaspoon of Garlic powder and one teaspoon of brewers Yeast into your dogs daily food ration and this will reduce the infestations. The last time I checked Off had the same ingerdience as Hartz. The Off was twice as strong(ingredience were double) as the Hartz. Off was half the price. I used Off but just used half as much. If you use Off on your self and not on your dog, what if your dog licks you? One more thing. If you live near salt water most fleas do not like to stay on dogs that swim in salt water. Salt water does not kill the fleas, but they don't like it.

Another view (safety) Quote from SC Johnson Company "It's not recommended that you use insect control or repellent products on your pets, unless they are specifically designed with your pets in mind. This is because animals tend to lick themselves, and by doing so, they may ingest a product that can potentially be hazardous to their health.

As with children, keep all insect control products out of the reach of your pets. Some products contain food to attract bug pests that may appeal to pets as well. When using an insect control product designed to control or eliminate a bug population in your home, follow the label directions and keep pets away from treated areas." end Quote.

Fleas can be removed with Duct Tape...roll it on the dog, and the fleas will stick to it...works well. Ticks have to be removed carefully because they are attached to the skin. lift them up from the back and pull them out.

A better solution for ticks:

Ticks are problematic, because of how they attach themselves, AND when attempts are made to pull them from the skin, they will burrow in deeper. Ask any good old southern boy who has had to clean the ticks off his hunting dog and he will tell you there is only one way to removed ticks by hand from your hound: burn their butts.

There are a couple ways to do this effectively. You can take a lit cigarette and touch the butt of the tick, but with the growing public distaste with smoking, you might try the second option. Take a common flat head nail and clamp it in the jaws of a pair of Vise Grip pliers. Heat the head of the nail that is oriented outward with a lighter or propane torch until just before it glows. Briefly touch this to the butt of the tick and just flick it away with your finger tips when it backs out.

Keep in mind that you are holding a very hot item close to the skin of your friend, so work quickly and carefully, and do it outside.
