What is the best way to treat an infected blister?

It is traditional for a blister to be kept dry and covered with a dry bandage. It is also traditional not to pop the blister because it can get infected. Being the daughter of a doctor I do know all that is true but my mother let me pop them with needles we ran through a match to kill germs. We also put alcohol on the needle and the blister then released the fluid so the blister would get pain relief. Then we clean up the area and dried it with a sanitary cloth. Next, we put Neosporin cream with pain reliever on it. Then we dabbed it to dry it as good as possible without taking away all the medication. We put on a big heel bandage and I had to put on a sock and wear sandals that did not rub the blister. Also my mother put special powder in the shoe to disinfect it but I can't remember what she put in it. Do not wear that same pair of shoes for several weeks if you can do that. If you are on a hike you are out of luck and will have to wear the boot. Do not let that blister get dirty and make sure your bathtub or shower is clean. IF YOU ARE DIABETIC YOU CANNOT DO THIS METHOD. YOU MUST GO TO YOUR DOCTOR OR PODIATRIST OR AN URGENT CARE PLACE TO HAVE DIABETIC FOOT CARE DONE SO YOU DON'T GET INFECTED AND HAVE THE SUGAR COLLECT AROUND THE BLISTER.

You can buy creams from the pharmacy which treat minor skin infections but if you find the redness of the infection surrounds the whole sore and it starts to spread out more each day you must get antibiotics from the doctor to treat this as the infection could actually turn into septicemia.
