Im not sure what the answer is but I have the same problem. I see someone also asked the question about a 2006 golf gti.

It appears to be a regular problem-I thought it would be a simple answer. I was told its a combination of pressing the trip compuiter buttons in a sequence of some sort.

I know that doesnt help at all.
