If you link together Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles, you get Sonic 3 & Knuckles, a game that is a combo of the two, including all levels playable as all characters (Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Sonic & Tails), and a new set of emeralds to collect on top of the chaos emeralds. These were the hyper emeralds. Collect them all and get 50 rings to unlock hyper sonic. Hyper sonic is super sonic but much faster, and with a double jump ability. You sacrifice your super sonic ability as you pursue the hyper emeralds. There is also a secret ending to the game with all of the hyper emeralds. Sonic 3 & Knuckles is my all time favorite Sega game, and I've played all of the Sonics.
