You can not unlock characters. The gray spaces are for when new characters are added.
Actually, you can get characters based on the level creator's decision. Some characters are selected for the purpose of that map. Some maps allow the choosing of all characters. Also, you must be using the official site - see related links.

∙ 12y agoThere is no way to unlock every character on happy wheels, this is because they haven't finished it, if you are playing a demo version go to totaljerkface.com to see everything they have so far.
