How do you upload pictures from a camera to a laptop?

The camera has to have a memory card. If your laptop is somewhat new, it has a slot to pop in memory cards. If you don't have a memory card slot on your laptop or the memory card won't fit in it, get a card reader. I found one that's not too expensive at Best Buy. You can also order one online. Most card readers plug in with a USB.

Most cameras have a USB lead (cable) supplied that plugs into the USB sockets (the same as for plugging in webcams). You need to:

1. Plug the lead into your computer
2. If you are using Windows (don't have a Mac so don't know about them) go to Start or the Windows icon-> My Computer
3. The camera should appear in the list in the My Computer dialog. If you have the Start Menu set to show subsidary items as a pop-out then the camera should appear in the list.

There are many ways to transfer your images from your camera to your computer; the easiest and most used way is to connect the camera directly to the computer using a USB cable. One end of the cable is connected to the camera and the other end is connected to your computer. Note: Be sure to read your camera's users manual for specific instructions on how to connect your camera to a computer.

Here are the basic instructions:

1. Have your computer on and your camera turned off. Be sure your camera's battery is fully charged.

2. Plug one end of your USB cable into your camera and the other end into a USB port on your computer.

3. Turn on your camera. Your computer should automatically recognize your camera and start the image transfer. If it does not be sure to follow the instructions that came with your camera.

4. When finished copying the images, your computer may ask you if you want to delete the pictures off of your camera. You should not delete your images at this time … always use your camera's built in format tool found in your camera's menu. See users manual for specific instructions.

You can also use a Card Reader to transfer your files from your memory card to your computer. To use a card reader follow these instructions:

1. Make sure your camera is off and remove your camera's memory card.

2. Plug your memory card into your card reader.

3. Plug your card reader into an available USB port on your computer.

4. Your computer should automatically recognize the card reader and ask what further action you would like to perform. Copy your picture files from the memory card to your computer. (If using a Mac your memory card will show up on the desktop as a drive volume. You will need to open the drive volume, then select and copy the images to your Mac.)

5. When you are done copying your images to your computer remove the card reader. (If you are using a Mac you will need to "eject" the card reader before removing.)

6. Put your memory card back into your camera.
