Assuming you have an analog voltage meter with a dial in the center:

1. There should also be an option for DCV or ACV. If you are measuring a Direct Current, use the DC side. If you are measuring Alternating Current, use the AC side. You're probably working with DC if you don't know how to use a voltage meter.

2. Most voltage meters have different options for the scale of the voltage you want to measure (i.e. 3V, 10V, 30V, 100V). You want to set the scale as low as you can, but higher than the voltage you are measuring. If you think the voltage you are measuring is about 4V, you want to set the scale to 10V by turning the dial in the center. If you don't know what your voltage will be, start with a higher scale and move it down if you're having trouble reading the voltage measurement. If you start with a low scale, and have a large voltage you maybe blow a fuse in the voltage meter.

3. In order for the voltage meter to work, your circuit needs to be live. Make sure your battery or power supply is connected properly and your circuit is closed.

4. The voltage meter needs to be connected in series with your circuit. Suppose you're measuring the voltage across a resistor. You need to connect the red wire coming from the voltage meter to the positive side of the resistor. This is the side through which the current is entering the resistor. Then connect the black wire to the negative side of the resistor.

If you're measuring the voltage across a number of components, the red wire must be connect to the positive side of the first component and to the negative side of the last component.

5. Look at the meter. The needle should have moved. There will be several arcs with measurements across the surface behind the needle. You need to look at the arc that has the scale you have selected. The needle will be directly over the measured voltage.

A megohm meter is used to test motor or transformer windings. It is used by placing the leads from a terminal to ground or between phases in a multi phase system. there should be no connection (OL) between the two.

A multimeter is an instrument used to check for AC or DC voltages, resistance or continuity of electrical components and small amounts of current in circuits. This instrument will let you check to see if there is voltage present on a circuit, etc.

I use a multimeter for some basic sanity checks and some rough measurements. Is the regulator outputting 5V? If the regulator is outputting 4.2V instead of 5V, then possibly the input voltage is not high enough. Perhaps something else is wrong? Put a meter on it! The multimeter is your first defense when troubleshooting a system.

There are fancy multimeters that are autoranging, meaning they automatically change their internal range to attempt to find the correct voltage, resistance, or current of the thing you're poking at. Set the knob to 'Voltage' and forget it. I've used an autoranging meter once or twice and, while it was fancy, it unfortunately just annoyed me. Because some readings can fluctuate quite quickly, the autoranger can get confused, quickly switching between the 20mA mode and 200mA mode trying to figure out what is going on.

If the multimeter has a current range, it usually involves changing the sockets where you plug the probes in, as all the current has to pass through the meter.

The voltage ranges are very sensitive and offer a high impedance to the circuit. On the one hand it puts no extra load on the circuit, on the other hand, it may not load a supply enough, to give a true reading off load. Or in other words you may see a voltage there, but it is of no use unless it can stand suppling current.

To use a multimeter sensibly, you must have a basic knowledge of what you are doing. Otherwise you may not select the correct range or parameter, to check what you are looking for, or unable to interpret what you see.

Megger test

On the whole megger testing is non destructive. What happens is a DC voltage is applied to the device or winding under test. It is an insulation test to see is the insulation has been injured in any way to cause a short circuit when normal power is applied to it. On my megger there are 3 ranges 300V, 750V, and 1000 volts. Applying the proper voltage is essential to not damaging the device you are testing. Working voltages up to 240 volts should use the 300 range. Working voltages up to 600 volts use the 750 volt range and working voltages above 600 use the 1000 volt range. As you can see if you used the 1000 volt range on a device that had a working voltage of say 24 volts you could damage the insulation just by testing it. So meggering a device is non destructive if you use the tester as its instructions tell you to.

Why should you put the meter on the negative side when measuring current?

A meter can be used both on the positive or negative side of a circuit when measuring current. The current going to a load should be equal to the current coming back from the load. When measuring DC current, make sure the meter should be more than adequete to be placed in series with the circuit. Otherwise, use a clamp-on meter.

When measuring current always place any type of meter in series with the circuit--is this true?

No. While it is true that one can measure current at any point in a circuit by breaking the circuit at that point and inserting the meter, not any meter will do it. One must use an ammeter to measure current.

How do you check for amps?

You need to use an ammeter - usually the current setting on a multi-meter. The meter should be connected to the circuit in series.

No. When measuring current, use an ammeter and place it in series in the circuit.

What is the name of the meter that is used to measure current?

Electrical current is measured with an "ammeter". (The unit of current is "ampere". Measure it with an 'ampere-meter' ==> 'amp-meter' ==> 'ammeter'.)

How do you use a miltimeater?

A multimeter is used to test an electrical current. The meter is turned to "zero" to begin. The black wire is on a piece of metal to ground it. The red wire then is used to touch the wire in question. If the meter needle moves, there is a current and the meter will show how much current in volts. Multimeters bought in hardware stores should not be used to check current of larger wires.

How does work ohmmeter?

ANY METER needs some kind of current flow to operate. Internal in the meter there are batteries that provide current that when passed trough a resistor will develop voltage as a function of the current. the meter will read this current and display the resistor size to cause this current to flow.
