To use a non digital metronome you need to wind up the winding key (lowest silver key). Take the plastic cover off the metronome and unhook the pendulum from the hook. After this is done slide the weight, on the pendulum, to your desired tempo. The speeds are written on the dial plate. Optional: To set the pitch use the bell tone selector, above winding key, and adjust the division.
