A colour wash on canvas is quite simple.

Dilute your paint to the consistency of milk.

Use a wide brush and lay the canvas flat.

Start at one side, with a fully loaded brush and sweep it smoothly across the a canvas, moving down with each stroke to achieve a thin layer of paint over the entire canvas.

Practice on old canvas to get the "feel" for this technique before you start a new project.

To get an oil stain off a canvas bag, first cover the stain with cornstarch or talcum powder to draw out some oil. After leaving the powder on for a few hours, brush it off and then rub Dawn dish detergent and hot water into the stain.

Remove as much of the mildew and other dirt as you can with a brush / toothbrush / lint brush.

Vacuum the area ( this is all best done outside to prevent spores from flying around the house )

Mix together equal parts of water and rubbing alcohol.

Dampen the area of your canvas that is covered in mildew with the alcohol-water cleanser. Gently rub with a clean towel to remove the mildew

Rinse the canvas thoroughly with cold water and allow to air dry.

Use a small amount of laundry detergent and water to clean your canvas if the mildew is stubborn and remains after the alcohol treatments.

Do NOT use Bleach , especially is the item has colors : it will never match the surrounding area and be more a project then the item is worth.

Or

Take the chair outside. Scrub the mildewed areas with a thick water and baking soda paste. When dry, brush off the extra baking soda. Let the chair remain out in the sun for a long day to kill the mildew and to air out. It should be fine after that.
