If you want the furniture to actually be white, you can certainly cover any stain with white paint. It is possible to get a paint specifically made with dense pigmentation, to cover other colors more effectively, but it is also possible to use multiple coats of paint until you get the desired result.
If you want to change from one stain to another, rather than just covering up the old stain, you can sand the wood down to remove the outer layer, then re-stain. This is much more work, but it may be what you have in mind.
