It depends on the axel and brake manufacturer, but must of the wires on the magnet do not have polarity. They work like a common resistor. One wire will connect to power and the other to a ground. It is Dexter's recommendation that a common ground be run from the the trailer plug to the brake magnets. Do not ground each brake individually to the trailer frame or structure. Also note that the brakes should be wired in parallel, not in series.

So, simply, you run the wires from your electric brake controller (You do have one, right?) through your trailer light jack, to your chosen "positive" side, and back again through your chosen ground, through the trailer light jack again. Some states require the use of a breakaway switch. What you would do in that case is add a "breakaway switch" in between the trailer battery (obviously it has to be on the trailer.) and the "positive" of the electric circuit, and the negative will also have to go through the battery/chassis ground. the switch cable is connected to the tow vehicle somewhere other than the hitch! This way if the trailer hitch fails catastrophically, the breakaway switch applied full breaking force to the trailer, trying to prevent it from rolling through a minivan full of kids.

If none of this makes sense, you should take a good look at automotive electrics first. This is really dangerous, and you has a potential to cause severe, (totalling) damage you, your trailer, and everyone around you if you don't do it right. Make sure you follow all accepted trade practices and good work techniques. Test EVERYTHING vigorously before you take it out on the highway. It's also a very simple job, so, do it, but be careful.

You should also look at the axel manufacturers website and documentation. they are full of good advice, Dexter's for example, can be found at http://www.dexteraxle.com/products___literature

If you are towing a 5000 lb travel trailer do you need to install a electric braking unit evev though you have a tow package?

Absolutely! You should never tow a trailer over 3,000lbs without brakes, especially with a Jeep. Make sure you install a brake controller, check your trailer brakes, and adjust and test the brakes to make sure you can stop safely.

Do you have to have a brake controller to haul a trailer?

i think that in some states it is illegal not to have one, but im pretty sure that if your car's brakes are good enough, you won't need one. but, it is terrible for your car's brakes if you dont have one and you are hauling a trailor. If the trailer has electric brakes - YES. Otherwise, no.

Is peterbuilt air brake knob yellow?

The Bendix OEM knobs for those valves are yellow and red. Yellow is for the brake control valve, which releases the brakes on the power unit. The red is for the trailer supply valve, which provides air to the trailer, both to release the trailer brakes, to inflate the air ride suspension, and to actuate the brakes when the brake pedal is depressed.

Do you need an electronic trailer brake controller for a 2002 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab that has a tow package?

How do you wire in electric trailer brakes in a pre wired 2003 GMC Envoy?

If it's anything like the 2005 Envoy, there are four wires tied to the side of the steering column without any sort of plug on the end. These are for the electric trailer brakes. I don't recall how they're labelled (they didn't match my brake's instructions exactly) but they were pretty intuitive.

What does brake towing weight mean?

it refers to the weight you are legally allowed to carry on a trailer with brakes. (including the trailer) trailers without brakes are restricted to a lesser weight.

For what purpose would an electric brake controller be used?

When one is using a trailer on their car, an electric brake controller measures the car's braking speed and adjusts the electric braking power of the trailer to correspond. This helps avoid collision between trailer and car.

07 f150 towing a 18 ft car hauler Do you need a trailer brake contoler or anything specialIt has the 7 pin adapter and has electric brakes on trailer?

You will need a trailer brake control installed in the truck. If you have the towing package on the truck (hitch receiver and seven blade plug) then the brake control is a simple plug in installation that takes no more than 20 minutes.

How to install an Electric brake?

To install electric brakes, first remove the wheel. Then remove the dust cap, nut, and washer; this will be the place where you install the electric brakes.

Why trailer brakes don't work when you press on the brakes everything is connected on f-150 2001?

check wiring on your plug make sure the wire on your truck that has power when you press the brakes is connected to the wire for the brakes on the trailer Remember you must have a brake controller installed in the vehicle, just because the vehicle has a "tow package" does not necessarily mean you are ready to tow a trailer with electric brakes. The only vehicles that currently have this capability are the late 05 and 06 Ford trucks f-250 and up, and that is an option that must be ordered when purchasing the vehicle. If you have a brake controller, check the fuses, if the fuses are good, and the brake controller is NOT a digital one, the controller may not be levelled correctly.
