Thank You LetterDirect the letter to the person who interviewed you, if possible.
Keep it short. Send the letter the day of the interview or the next day. DO NOT WAIT! You want to hit them while they are still deciding who to hire!
Say something like, "I wanted to thank you for the opportunity of speaking to me regarding the __________ position. I truly feel that I am the best candidate for the job because ___________________________________.
Thanks again for your time and consideration,
Sincerely,
Your name
<><>
Here is more advice:
  • I would always follow-up with a thank you letter when I am interested in the position. As a matter of fact, not many candidates do, and this is to your benefit. You can also use it to reemphasize why you are qualified i.e. "...after speaking to you, I feel even more confident in my ability to do the job..." Use the thank you letter as a tool that reinforces or clears up any doubts the employer might had have of you. And don't forget to actually thank them for their time. Of the skills are actually what is going to get you the job, but I've been in situations where I was one of two applicants, and my thank you letter tipped the scale my way.
  • I would always send a thank you letter, even if you are not interested in that specific position. You never know when you may be back before that person for a different position or interviewing at that company with a different person who consults the other person for an opinion on you.
  • Always send it within 48 hrs. after the interview. It should be in the same format as the cover letter. Yet, the thank you letter should be more concise than the cover letter. Make it enthusiastic and positive by all means.

Here is a template to use as main suggested paragraphs by order:
  1. Start with gratitude towards the opportunity/time the employer gave you.
  2. Continue with expressing your interest in the job.
  3. Enclose documents if required.
  4. Reiterate your thanks and hope for future interaction/interviews.

It never hurts to show that you appreciated someone taking their time to interview you for a job especially if you get that job, but if you didn't get the job, a firm handshake before leaving your interview should be sufficient. This person probably interviewed hundreds of people and never received any kind of letter thanking him for his time in interviewing you.

That's one way of looking at this and the other way is that if you do send a letter of thanks make sure you write down the date and time of your interview as that person is not likely to remember you from anyone else. You never know a leter of thanks if well done might land you a job there in the future as the interviewer will think to themselves, my he or she was polite enough to send me a letter of thanks, maybe I should re-interview them again. It's hard to know what the other person is thinking but anything is worth a try.

Good luck

Dear Mr. Jones.

I appreciate your taking the time to interview me on Monday, 1 December, 2008. The opportunity you extended to me is a most generous one. Those efforts you made to set me at ease did not go unnoticed, and speak to your fine sense of accommodation. Please accept my most profound thanks for all your consideration. Certainly if there is anything more you wish from me that might assist you in the selection process, I would be more than happy to provide it.

Sincerely,

John Doe

Keep it short, and you might want to choose smaller words. But the idea is to be sincere, demonstrate continued interest, and remind Mr. Jones that you're available to him while you are waiting for his decision. The letter is actually a thank you that is a reminder of who you are and that you're "on the list" for a possible position. Good luck.........

It would seem that not many people bother to do this but it is only common courtesy really. Writing to the person you had the interview with, thanking them for the opportunity to learn more about the position on offer was much appreciated. Take full advantage of this continuing dialogue with your prospective employer by restating say three key points where you feel that your skills and experience will ensure you can quickly make s positive impact on the continuing success of the business. These will be specific to the interview you have had of course and that's why its always worth making a few brief notes after the interview listing areas where reminding the interviewer of your suitability for the role will be useful. Write the letter, make your points, sell yourself and rest assured, you will be in a minority who bother and that's a great advantage to have.

You do not write a thank you letter "afer a phone call for an interview". You just go to the interview. After the INTERVIEW, you wite a thank you note. Don't make it a "letter' - make it a stationary note. Simply say you were very grateful for the interview, because that's all you have to say. Do it right away, don't wait a few days.
