First you need to make sure you are around a wireless internet connection. From the home page, tap "Settings", then tap "WiFi". If you are near a connection, it will show up under "Choose a Network". Select the network you desire (you may need to enter a password), then press the home button. Tap "Safari" and begin browsing the internet.
There is no need to plug in anything - this is wireless. It will work just like your pc!!!
If there are no WiFi connections nearby though, the internet will not work.
