Lab reports have specific guidelines in formatting but it also depends on who the teacher is and how he or she wants it to be done. the most common way to write a conclusion however is the 3 paragraph format.

First there is a an intro paragraph, then a body paragraph that details and explains what happened in the lab and then answers analysis questions. The last paragraph is to sum everything up. You can write the importance of the lab, maybe errors that occured, etc.

Here is an example of a lab conclusion about boyles and Charles laws:

Gases have different properties that we can observe. These properties include gas , pressure, temperature. mass, and the volume. Observation shows that these variables are related to one another and that these properties can determine the states of a gas. Boyle's law states that at a constant temperature the volume of a gas is inversely proportional to the pressure while Charles law states that the relationship between temperature and volume are proportional to one another. In this lab both Boyle's law and Charles's law are observed closely to determine the relationship between pressure, volume, and temperature.

Boyle's Law states that the product of the pressure and volume for a gas is a constant for a fixed amount of gas at a fixed temperature. The mathematical relationship of Boyle's law is given as PV=k (P= pressure, V= volume, k= constant). In the lab, when the pressure of the gas was increased, the volume of the gas decreased. This can be seen when, as more weights are added onto the piston, the pressure increased while the volume decreased leaving less room for the particles to move around. Initially, when the volume was 10 Liters and the pressure was 1 ATM., the value of k was 10 L ATM. This value for k was the same even after a 50 Kg. weight was added changing the volume to 8.39 Liters and the pressure to 1.18 ATM. Another law that states the relationship between temperature and volume when pressure is constant is Charles's law. The mathematical relationship is V/T=b (V= volume, T= temperature, b= a constant). As volume increases so does the temperature. The initial value for b (the constant) before the heating of the gas inside the piston chamber was around 0.017 L / K. This value was also the same or constant after increasing the temperature of the gas inside the piston by 10 degrees Celsius. Initially, for temperature of 25o C or 298 K the volume was 5 liters (pressure constant) and at 35o C or 308 K, the volume changed to 5.17 Liters but when you substitute these values into the equation V/T= b, b is the same value. Thus, even though the values change in both laws, the constant remains the same.

The constant in Charles law depends on the quantity of gas and the pressure. The ratio of volume to temperature for any set of volume - temperature values always equals the same. In Boyle's law, the constant for different gases can be determined by finding out the volumes and pressures.

A strong conclusion contains the main facts which are discovered by the experiment and links them to known science.

It would also point out any flaws in the experiment, depending on the level of the writer suggestions for (lower level age 11-16) better equipments and methods or (higher level 16+) different experimental method which could fill in any doubts.

Going further by linking the experiment to other experiments which have been done by others with references would make a professional document.

Observing Falling Motion

PROBLEM

Our task was to design and construct a rotocoper that will take the longest time to fall to the ground from a height of 2 m and that will remain intact for three trials.

HYPOTHESIS

We believe that by making the blades of the rotocopter wide as well as long, only adding one paper clip, keeping the stem fairly short and using thin paper will help slow down the rotocopter's fall. We can make these assumptions based on our experiences of constructing rotocopters in our last experiment. All of the above are independent variables which influence the rate at which the rotocopter falls (the dependent variable). We presume that with these small modifications, (i.e. making the rotocopter light, lengthening the blades) there will be more air resistance, therefore slowing down the fall of the rotocopter.

MATERIALS

· Paper (We used normal printing paper)

APPARATUS

  • Pencil

  • Ruler

  • Paperclip(s)

  • Scissors

  • Stop watch or a watch with a second hand

PROCEDURE

1. A rotocopter was built.

2. The rotocopter was dropped for 3 consecutive trials approximately 2 m above the ground.

3. Quantitative observations were made.

OBSERVATIONS

CONCLUSION

Our hypothesis proved to be correct. Even though we experimented with many different types of rotocopters we found that the one with similar dimensions and large blades took the longest time to reach the ground. What we also found was that the more paper clips we attached to the rotocopter the more it descended with greater speed. The final conclusion we came to was that the air resistance was greater than the gravitational pull due to the lightweight paper we used to construct the rotocopter.
