First of all, you need to get a sheet of paper. Usually, A4 is used, however you may opt for A5 if your letter will be printed.

This is where your options open up. Now, if you have a computer/laptop and a printer, you may wish to type up your letter. Bear in mind, however, that a handwriting your letter will give it a personal touch.

Whichever option you choose, you will need to start your letter with "Dear", followed by the name of the person who you are communicating. If in doubt, just use "Dear Sir/Madam".

The content of the letter is up to you. If it is a letter to someone you do not know, or do not know well, then use a formal tone. If you are writing to a friend or to family, you can be more informal.

When you are done with the content of your letter, sign off with either "From [name]", "Yours faithfully, [name]" or "Yours sincerely, [name]". "Yours faithfully" is used when the name of the recipient is unknown to you. On the other hand, "Yours sincerely" is used when contacting someone who you know (at least by name). "From [name]" is very informal.

Congratulations, your letter is written, and is now ready for posting, emailing, faxing, or even hand-delivery.
