How does Beowulf trap and kill grendel?

Beowulf waits for Grendel to attack the mead hall, then surprises him by grappling him with great strength. When Grendel tries to escape, Beowulf tears off his arm, causing the monster to flee back to its lair where it later dies from its wounds.

In the words of the actual poem (Seamus Heanley Translation), starting at line 815

" ... a tremendous wound appeared on his (Gendel's) shoulder. Sinews split and the bone lappings burst ... Grendel was driven under the fen-banks fatally hurt. to his desolate lair" After the battle with Grendel's mother Beowulf finds Grendel's body in the cave "... in its resting place ..." and beheads it. (Line 1580)

The symbolic how is diferent. Both Grenel and Beowulfrepresent the culture of the Vikings. Grendel the old ways with the worship of Odin and the other Aesir, Beowulf the new wave of Christianity coming to the land. Both are nearly invulnerable but Beowulf defeats Grendel as the new culture will overtake the old.

In 'Beowulf,' the monster, Grendel is defeated by Beowulf when he tries once again to enter Hrothgar's Mead Hall and slay warriors. Believing them all to be asleep, Grendel devours one warrior, but is surprised when he comes face to face with Beowulf. Grendel, who had relied on a spell which made him immune to weapons, had little experience in actual hand to hand combat. In the end, a death blow, which rips off Grendel's arm, sends him off to the woods to find a place to die.

As Beowulf and his men sleep that night, Grendel attacks again, eating one of Beowulf's men. Without a weapon, Beowulf jumps up and grabs onto Grendel's hand, and a battle ensues. His men attempt to help him, but because Grendel cannot be harmed by human weapons, their swords do no damage. Finally, Beowulf is able to rip Grendel's arm out of the socket, and Grendel runs home to die in the marshes.
