The character Whistler, a demon to keep the balance between good and evil, appears in season 2 in a flashback ("Becoming part one) where he meets Angel, who is living off rats in LA, he takes him to Sunnydale to see Buffy as she is "Called" to be the slayer. Angel decides he must help Buffy in her quest and turns his life around. We first see him in the episode "Angel" where he is tracking her and gives her a Cross.
