∙ 12y agoH G Wells's 'The Red Room' is in many ways a parody of the Gothic genre, where evil was often represented by an external entity: ghost, monster, vampire etc. It uses many of the features synonymous with the Gothic genre: the isolated setting, the three "grotesque custodians" of the castle, the darkness, shadows and candles blowing out. However, the suggested ghosts of an earl or his mistreated countess do not materialise and although the young narrator experiences a very disturbing night in the 'red room', he finally concludes that the fear comes from inside himself.
Therefore, it could be said that Wells does support Poe's famous quote: "If in many of my productions terror has been the thesis, I maintain that terror is not of Germany but of the soul", where Poe denied his writing was similar to the Germanic fantasy genre - more commonly known today as the Gothic genre.
