Answer

Pullman has made controversial statements, telling The Washington Post in 2001 he was "trying to undermine the basis of Christian belief." In 2003, he said that compared to the Harry Potter series, his books had been "flying under the radar, saying things that are far more subversive than anything poor old Harry has said. My books are about killing God."

Pullman has stated on SEVERAL occasions that it is his INTENTION AND PURPOSE TO UNDERMINE THE BASIS OF Christianity!

Answer

I used to think the above wasn't true, but looking at interviews that Pullman has posted on his own site... I think this person may have a point. Pullman seems to object to the monopoly that Christianity has claimed on morals, good and evil, the creation of the world... everything, really. I don't know if he's out to destroy Christianity, but he certainly doesn't hold with it himself.

Please note that the novel in question was published under the name Northern Lights in the United Kingdom and Australia and The Golden Compass in the United States.

The Golden Compass plays on the fight against a personal preference and the church's desire to control the people's thoughts.

The "deamons" do refer to the "inner demon" within every person, but instead of neglecting the fact, the movie embraces this.

In a way, they try to kill God.

The deamons are the people's consciouses (spelled it wrong) there the little voice in your head that tells you what's right and wrong

They talk about God, the power of God, and the authority of God throughout the books. They talk about how Christianity is wrong and stuff like that.

This book contains a lot of atheist views.

The book aims to undermine religion, specifically the Christian church. However, just because it promotes Atheism, it does not necessarily mean that it is bad. Atheism is a perfectly valid point of view, even if you don't agree with it.
