Scrooge had a lonely childhood. He was abandoned at boarding school by his father even at Christmas. These experiences in addition to losing loved ones and the the bankruptcy of his employer who he idolised made him focus on making money, in doing so he felt that people taking Christmas Day off were idle and picked the pocket of honest men like him

∙ 7y agoFred, Scrooges nephew loved Christmas. His mother Fan (Scrooges sister) was believed to have been (based on Dickens description) a very loving family person and wanted nothing more than family around her. Fred has these traits and continually sees to bring Scrooge back to the family unit

- In talking to the gentlemen that come calling for money for the poor he may be just reacting to their "once a year" concerns for the poor na needy
- He supports the local economy by hiring at least Bob Cratchit and his housekeeper and charwoman
- He despairs of his nephew Fred's spendthrift ways and has cared for him since Scrooge's sister's death
- He is frugal and lives within his means but dresses well enough to deal with wealthy business men
- He pays his taxes and supports the welfare programs set up and approved by the government of the day
- He is a realist, hard working capitalist and is respected by his peers
- Until the arrival of the ghosts he had learned to live with and get past the traumas of his youth
- He may be following more traditional Christmas traditions than those present in England at the time by not holding its tone of celebration and not having "heather" decorations his office or home
