Tom matures in "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" by taking responsibility for his actions, learning the value of honesty, and showing compassion towards others. He goes from being a mischievous and carefree boy to becoming more thoughtful and considerate of those around him. Through various experiences and adventures, Tom becomes more self-aware and develops a sense of accountability for his choices.
Tom disobeys his Aunt Polly when he jumps the fence and escapes his Aunt before receiving a punnishment. He goes to the swimming hole and rips the collar of his shirt. He tricks other children into whitewashing the fence by making them think that he is privileged to do it, when in reality it was his punnishment. He escapes to an Island to play pirate and has everyone in his small town worried. He returns from the Island on his funeral so that people will be glad to seem him and praise and love him for just simply being alive. He knows that they will have loving reactions because they receive the great surprise that he's alive.
Huck and Tom are very sweet boys but they are racist and immuture. While some people are racist it is wrong and Samuel Clemens is trying to show that there are some sick people in the world who believe slaves should be allowed and that racism is not good. Back in the 1800's when this book was supposed to take place there were more people who were leaning towards the side of slavery because that was the " Status Quo " back then, though now the words that Huck use are cruel, were okay to use and in fact the people in those times were encouraged to use those words. Some of these words were also in " Roll Of Thunder Hear My Cry ".
One example of how Tom show's maturity is at the end of the novel, when he convinces Huck to go back and live with the Widow Douglas again and to give her another chance. He says that he should be able to deal with the way she lives because he took her in.
Also, without knowing it, Tom is a lot wiser and cleverer than any of the other kids his age, including Huck. This is because he knows how to decieve others. Without others knowing it, Huck's manipulation is a powerful weapon that he constantly uses to his benefit, though he is oblivious to how it harms others.
Of course, that aspect can be argued as immature because he's using his intelligence to his own advantage.
He takes the blame when Becky rips the page in the teacher's book, he gives Becky half of his wedding cake when they get trapped in the cave, he keeps on visiting Muff Potter in jail because he feels bad, and he takes the blame when Sid takes sugar from the sugar bowl.
Tom Sawyer matures when he learns honesty and he learns to tell the truth. Tom use to be a troublemaker but now he has sort of stop. He matures when he tells the truth in the case.
