How is cactus adapted to survive in desert?

The cacti (in general) have made many modifications to collect, store and retain water. Adaptations include:

• a low surface to volume ratio to reduce evaporation
• a waxy outer layer to prevent transpiration of water
• a modified CO2 scavenging system to allow CO2 capture with minimum water loss
• a wide shallow root system to collect any water that reaches the soil
• a responsive root system to capitalize on any abundant water after a rainfall
• in some cacti deep taproot to store water in cooler environment
• spines to minimize surface damage by animal browsing
• long lasting (non-deciduous) leaves to minimise regrowth

It all depends on the place it is in.

In a particular desert there is an ocean nearby. The water condensates and then the cacti take all of the moisture in. It keeps that for a long time.

Any water possible, it will soak up like a sponge.

Cacti can live in the desert because, inside of the cactus there is a water system which stores water into the cactus from the ground. The roots are very long but they don't go very deep in the ground they stretch out their roots across the earth. When explorers are in the desert they tear open a cactus to get water, but they had to be careful of those sharp spikes [Because cacti has a waxy covering!]

They have the really sharp spikes so no other animas can take the water that they struggle to get, or so no other animal will try and eat them.
in the body of a catus, water is stored as not much rain falls where a cactus so water is stored to prevent the cactus from dying out. there are thorns on cacti to prevent it from being eaten by a predator.

they survive because the have long roots that go down in search of water, they don't get hot because they don't have big leaves, also their insides are full of water storage!

The roots of the desert plants grow deep or spread wide, to get water from the ground. They give off chemicals which slow down the growth of the roots of other plants. In this way they stop other plants from taking their share of water.
