How does a clapper work?

[Edit]

How a Clapper Works

The clapper contains a microphone and a trigger circuit that responds to sharp, loud noises such as your hands clapping. Chances are good that they have included a circuit which limits the range of frequencies in which it'll respond, helping to tune it to match the audio frequency of the clapping sound.

The trigger circuit has several possible designs, especially in designing the portion that controls the AC for the lights, TV, etc. But rest assured, the manufacturer will make it the most dependable and least expensive way possible.

It's relatively easy to design and build yourself, but mass production just makes it more convenient and in most cases, cheaper to just go ahead and buy one.
