A photographic film is placed at a distance equal to the focal length of a lens in a dark case with the lens obstructed by a shutter. On click, the shutter is opened for a brief amount of time as required depending upon the exposure level required for the film and then released. The film is then washed off in a dark room for the chemical on the unexposed area and white patches remain at those places. For ex. black coulour hair reflects no light and does not expose the film at that area. When washed off, it leaves a white patch which is called the negative. This is used to expose a photographic paper where a reverse process takes place. Light passes through the white patch exposing the paper making a black impression at that area. It happens for other colours too in the same way depending upon the colour a particular area is exposed to.
