A fossil is the remains left of a once living organism. Frequently seen in a form where mineralization has replaced much of the original being, but preserving the fine structure.
Where the thing is still largely in its original condition, without replacement, is may be considered a sub fossil. For example, many old old human remains are of this class.
Limestones are the commonest fossil you'll find, and with a microscope, you may be able to discern the original beings - or at least their remains.
