How does a game go platinum?

Platinum games are a term used soley for Xbox and Xbox 360 games. It is given to games that have sold over 400 000 units in the first nine months of it's release, and has dropped in price to: $19.99 for Xbox games and $29.99 for Xbox 360 games.
