The vibration of the strings causes the soundboard (top) of the guitar to vibrate in a similar manner. The vibration of the soundboard then causes the air inside (and around) the guitar to vibrate...the vibrations of the air is what you hear.and what you hear is known as a sound wave or sound waves

The 'vibrations' are the resonance of the note picked. If we're talking about electric, vibrations aren't so important, but are still needed. The vibrations will, well, vibrate through out the guitar, through the bridge, the neck, the whole thing. Its the hollowed body of the acoustic that projects it, and the pickups of an electric that sends it to the amp.

Acoustic GuitarWhen an acoustic guitar string vibrates the changing string tension causes the top to move in and out slightly, creating sound pressure waves. A common misperception is that an acoustic guitar creates sound through the hole, which is not the case; the entire top vibrating is what causes sound waves, not the hole. The top vibrates at different rates depending of the bracing specific to a particular instrument. The purpose of the hole is to allow air to freely come in and out of the body, and may be placed anywhere, even on the back. In fact, Guitars with holes that are not on the top are often louder because the lack of a hole means more air mass can be moved, and the lack of bracing to support the hole means the top vibrates more.

How to make different notes with a guitar? The pitch created by a guitar string is dependent on three factors: string length, string mass, and tension. The standard guitar strings on a commercial guitar are designed so the lower the expected pitch, the larger the mass, which keeps a consistent tension on the strings despite being tuned to different pitches. As you might expect, the larger the mass of the string, the slower the vibration and the lower the pitch.

Once the guitar is tuned, the pitch is controlled by changing the length of the string is vibrating by pressing the string down at a particular fret.

Electric Guitar

The vibrating string induces an electric current in the pickup(s), this is modified and amplified by the electronics connected to the guitar and the sound is broadcast from loudspeakers (or recorded directly by ancillary equipment.
