Possums live in tree hollows or roof cavities in suburban houses. They feed on nectar, tender leaves and shoots, fruits and some feed on insects. They are nocturnal creatures, and usually arboreal, meaning they spend most of their time in trees (except for those which live in roof cavities).

True possums - that is, native marsupials of Australia - are quite different to the American opossum.

Possums are native to Australia. They are common throughout both the mainland and Tasmania wherever there are bushland areas and plenty of trees. They are also quite at home in suburban areas, and regularly claim their territory in the roofspace of people's houses. They also live in New Zealand, having been introduced there in the nineteenth century. Due to the absence of natural predators, they have become a pest in that country, causing considerable damage to the environment, and populating the islands very quickly. There is no limit to where they can live, except in high alpine areas or deserts, so their environment includes New Zealand forests, farmland and residential areas.

Possums are native to Australia, so they are commonly found in eucalyptus bushland. Animals which share their arboreal (tree) habitat include any of the gliders (sugar glider, feathertail, mahogany, yellow-bellied, greater and squirrel glider), and koalas. Also essentially ground-dwelling but sharing the same habitat can be wombats, wallabies and quolls.

Like other animals, they all need food, water, and oxygen to live.
