A religion is a shared belief. New religions form from old religions when a group becomes dissatisfied with changes, or with liturgical interpretations, or with the leadership of the religion. Notable instances of this are the Puritans, or the modern-day Anglicans who split from the Episcopal Church. Occasionally a powerful leader or prophet will influence the path of a religion, either changing it or causing a schism that leaves one older path and one newer path (as in Christianity, Buddhism, and Sikhism). In ancient times, revelations and concepts of enlightenment were only slowly spread, but there were also fewer competing faiths. Once the practices of a religion were codified or written down, any changes to them could cause controversy.
Religions seem to spontaneously develop within societies when a belief or faith becomes communicated. Some people will adopt the religion because it matches or reinforces their existing faith. Some will change from faith to faith seeking one that they can espouse.
What we now call "religion" started when people began to be aware of a force in the universe more powerful than they. There is no date for this, it began before humans began counting time.
