It works just like a normal circuit breaker with one additional function. A shunt-trip breaker also has a built-in magnetic coil that can be energized externally to trip the breaker. For instance, fire sprinklers are sometimes required in the top of elevator shafts in case of a fire in the shaft. If the sprinklers were to spray water on the electric controls in the elevator cab, people could be hurt or killed, either from electrocution or from the elevator malfunctioning. In these cases, a shunt-trip breaker is installed in the circuit feeding the elevator controls, and the fire alarm system sends a trip signal if it detects waterflow from the sprinkler system. This trips the breaker and removes power from the elevator cab. Once tripped, shunt-trip breakers require a person to manually reset them.

A shunt-trip breaker will cut off power to another disconnect switch or breaker in the event of fire or too much heat prior to fire sprinckler system activating and pouring water on live electrical componants.

A shunt trip breaker can be a single, two or three pole breaker. In the shunt trip breaker there is a shunt trip coil that trips the breaker. This coil can be a variety of working voltages. For control purposed 120 volt is quite common. On a 120 volt coil one side of the coil is connected to a "hot" circuit and the other side of the coil is connected to the neutral. If the trip coil voltage was higher that 120 volts, yes there would be two "hots" to the coil.

A shunt-trip coil is a built-in component of a shunt-trip circuit breaker. It is a magnetic coil that can be energized externally to make the breaker trip to shut off the flow of current.

For instance, fire sprinklers are sometimes required in the top of elevator shafts in case of a fire in the shaft. If the sprinklers were to spray water on the electric controls in the elevator cab, people could be hurt or killed, either from electrocution or from the elevator malfunctioning. This trips the breaker and removes power from the elevator cab.

Once tripped, a shunt-trip breaker requires a person to reset it manually.

Why would power be received before breaker but with breaker on no power is in any recepticles?

The voltage before the breaker is from the distribution panel's buss bars. This voltage is controlled by the panel's main breaker. To have no voltage on the terminal of the breaker means that either the breaker is shut off or it has gone into a trip position. If it has tripped push the handle of the breaker to the off position and then to the on position. This should reset the breaker. If the voltage is not present at the output terminal of the breaker after resetting it, then replace the breaker as it has a fault in it.

How do you test a 220 volt breaker?

You will need a multimeter to check a 220 volt breaker. You should unplug appliances that go to that particular breaker. Use the multimeter at the breaker to check the voltage. If it shows 220, then the breaker is okay. If it doesn't, then the breaker is no good.
