It has a mouth on its underside and it sucks in water through there and spits the water out through its top. It has collar cells (its male sex cells and digestive tract) that are attached inside of it that catch the algae that float through and digest them for the sponge. Then the sponge ejects its waste out of its top hole with the rest of the water going through.
