Thermal power plant uses heat source like burning coil, gas, wood or natural heat sources like solar heat or geysirs. Heat is transformed to vaporising water. When water turns into steam it has lot of energy(entalphy) in it. this energy is used in wanted application as turbine or central heating. Most of the energy is where the steam turns back to water. Thermal power plant usually has both electric turbine and distributional heating because of better use of energy. Electric power production pays more and some applications are made only for electric production.

Should a power plant where the prime mover is a gas turbine be categorized as a thermal power plant?

No, a power plant that uses fossil fuels such as gas or coal, cannot be classified as a thermal power plant. A thermal power plant uses the heat from deep within the earth, combined with water to create steam, which then powers the turbines.

What is the difference between thermal power plant and captive thermal power plant?

The basis of differentiation is end user. A thermal power plant produces electricity to sell the same to different end users through grid. But, in case of a captive thermal power plant generation of electricity generally is to meet the demand of power by the parent industry. For e.g. an Alumunium smelter plant requires huge quntity of elctric energy to operate. To secure undisrupted source of energy it may set up its own power plant which in turn can be termed as the captive power plant. But, in certain cases excess electricity can be sold to the market.

What is Deemed Generation for Thermal Power Plant?

deemed generation means means the energy which a thermal power generating station was capable of generating but could not generate due to reasons beyond the control of the generating station or on account of non-availability of Transmission Licensee's transmission lines or on receipt of backing down instructions from the State Load Dispatch Centre resulting in shortage of various fossil fuel such as coal n all...

Why is the gas turbine called as the power plant?
