Best Answer

Leaves have tiny holes in them through which air enters, and air contains carbon dioxide. Once inside the leaf the carbon dioxide can dissolve in the leaf juices of whatever sort (depending upon species) and can be used for photosynthesis.

While trees are net producers of oxygen when the whole cycle of photosynthesis is reviewed, they still produce CO2 as part of their cellular respiration, decomposition and if they are burned in in forest fires,. In addition trees foster a large ecology of insects such as termites and decomposers which release both methane (a greenhouse gas) and carbon dioxide.
