How does a wind turbine harness the wind?

Answer:
The large blades on a wind turbine are designed to create lift to get them to spin. Most wind turbines can yaw so that they are perpendicular upwind or downwind (depending what the design is) to the wind. An anemometer is used on top of the wind turbine to track down wind direction and speeds. They are also placed after 1-4 years of wind studies are done in that area.
