A wind vane has a horizontal bar (sometimes it's a tube or shaft), which is mounted upon a circular pivot point that allows the bar to freely spin around in a horizontal plane pointing in any direction of the wind. A tail is placed at one end of the bar and the other end is used as the direction indicator (the pointer). The tail has more wind resistance than the small pointer, so a wind will always force the tail. This points the indicator (the pointer) into the wind to correctly show the wind direction. Often this pivot point is placed just slightly close toward the point than the tail. This adds leverages to the mechanical energy of the wind force placed upon the tail, which allows the indicator to correctly point into the wind even with low wind speeds. A windsock, often seen at airports or near helicopter pads points the opposite way of a weather vane - a windsock points into the direction where the wind is going, not from where it came like the wind vane.
The wind vane rotates freely on a veritical rod and becomes aligned by the direction of the wind.

it is lick a sock with the bottom end or toe cut off, hence the name. it is placed on a swivel, so that air blowing through it makes it extend, and the swivel makes it turn whatever direction the wind is strongest.

A windsock fills with the wind, and tells which direction that the wind is blowing. A wind vane also does the same thing as a wind sock. Both point in the direction opposite of where the wind is coming.

The wind sock is an orange cone made of cloth. While it is fairly accurate at indicating the wind direction, it only broadly shows the wind velocity, by the extent to which the cone is pushed outward from the pole.

Generally used around heliports and airports, it indicates any crosswinds at speeds that could affect aircraft and helicopters on landing or takeoff. In low winds, direction is not as important, and above its maximum the actual speed is not as relevant.

A wind sock is a cone-shaped pennant which is mounted on a pole, and is free to rotate. The wind fills the cone (there's a hole at the end) and turns with the wind so that the pointy end is pointing the way the wind is blowing.

It's normally bright orange, and there's a small weight at the tip; in a light breeze, you can see it turning, but it drags down. In a stronger breeze, it will point out a little, and in a strong wind it stands straight out. With a little practice, you can estimate the speed of the wind by how straight the wind sock is.

It's the cheapest and most valuable weather instrument at any airport, and it takes no power, requires little maintenance, and is always accurate enough.

A windsock and wind vane work almost in a similar manner. The wind vane focuses on the direction of the wind while windsock will also measure the strength.

Actually the weathervane arrow points to the direction from which the wind is coming.
