How wolves defend there territory, well they create a pack. And then when the pack is formed they choose a leader for the pack. So the leader has to protect the pack form the dangers that lies for them. And then later on another wolf takes over for the pack.

Wolves howl to warn off other packs from their territory. (However, they are less likely to do this if pups are present so as to prevent attracting attention)

A wolf pack is a hierarchal family structure with the strongest, most dominant wolves at the top of the pyramid, and the more shy, timid members at the bottom. The pack is ruled first by the "alpha" male and female, then by the "beta", second ranking wolves, and so forth down to the "omega" wolves, the lowest members of the pack. The alphas are the only pair allowed to mate in the pack, with most of the other members usually being the pair's offspring. A pack may consist of mostly or only the mating pair and their offspring, from the pair's first litter to their most recent litter, ranging from new born pups to adult wolves (think of a newborn baby sister and an older brother who still lives at home and everyone else in between).

Some members of the pack, whether offspring, relatives, etc., stay in that pack for life. However, wolves will "break-off" from the pack to find a mate, as well as a territory of their own, to produce and rear pups. It sounds pretty simple, but this isn't an easy task, and these "lone wolves" sometimes have to wait months or even years to find a good territory and a suitable partner. In areas where wolves flourish, due to low government regulation and a high abundance of prey, neighboring packs are constantly claiming and fighting over land. This makes it very difficult for a new mating pair to leave their original packs and create a new one. Think of beach-side properties as an example. They are in high demand, usually come with a heavy price, and are, therefore, very difficult to acquire. So it is with wolf territories, and instead of paying millions for their costly estate, they may end up paying with their lives. Wolves will fight to the death to protect their land and the food sources within it, keeping intruders out at all costs. If a lone wolf is fortunate enough to find a mate, acquire land that is a sufficient size and sustains enough prey to support them and their future offspring, they must then secure their boundaries.

Wolves have many different ways which they establish their territory. The three main ways of establishing territory is by scent marking, vocal communication (i.e. howling), and direct physical contact. The most common way a wolf will mark his or her territory is by scent marking the borders. A wolf will urinate on different land marks, making a border around their territory. Wolves will also rub their bodies along surfaces (i.e. plants, bushes, and grass) to leave their scent. Another way they "scent-mark" is by swiftly, in an almost running-in-place motion, rub their paws along the ground. All of these techniques allow the wolf's scent to be spread onto different land-marks, which literally mark the border of their territory.

Another way of establishing territory is by the use of vocal communication, most commonly, howling. A wolf, with its astounding hearing abilities are able to hear the howls of other wolves up to 60 miles away. Not only are they able to hear other wolves at such far distances, but scientists have actually studied wolves in the wild that use howling as vocal communication on subjects as specific as prey location, as well as territory boundaries. Wolves, as individuals, as well as the entire pack, will howl to establish their location, if they "own" the place they are currently located, and as a warning to other wolves to stay out of their territory.

The last, and usually last-resort, of establishing territory boundaries, is direct, physical-contact conflict. When barriers of neighboring packs are constantly being unacknowledged and disrespected, packs will enter a face-to-face combat with their rival packs. The relationship is no longer a diplomatic, low-danger warning system, but becomes a bloody death brawl, in which the winner(s) are able to reestablish and secure their territory, sometimes even claiming part or all of the losing pack's territory.
