Your body will fight the infection, building a thin wall around the end of the root, and containing the pus that is leaking . In many cases the initial pain and swelling go away, but the chronic abscess can become acute again very quickly if your immune system becomes run-down.

Whenever foreign invaders attack our immune system tries to attack and destroy them. Abscess is also a defensive mechanism of our body in order to prevent infection. The process is accomplished in following steps:

  1. Invaders enter the body and start to destroy neighboring tissues.
  2. This destruction triggers production of cytokines which give an inflammatory response.
  3. The blood supply in the attacked region is increased and large number of Neutrophils reach the infection site.
  4. The surrounding tissues make an abscess wall and seal off the cavity to limit the infection to one region.

Though this process limits the infection but also prevents more neutrophils from reaching the infection site and destroying the invaders.

This may also happen if a toxic substance or splinter enters the body.
