many antibiotics like penicillin act on the bacterial cell wall and break the NAG-NAM bonds, so there is lysis hence death of bacteria, others like tetracyclin stop protein synthesis and so it stops growth, mitomycin and actinomycinD cause breaks in the DNA. So they can act in varied ways but their job is to kill.

Because the specific purpose of antobiotics are to destroy the protein coating surrounding bacteria, so the bacteria just explode. It doesn't directly "kill" the bacteria so to speak. It'd be like melting the skin off a human until their insides just poured out. (Sorry for the gruesome analogy.)

Most antibiotics kill invading bacteria while minimally harming the host by?

targeting structures found only in bacterial cells and not the host cells

Why might some people like to eat yogurt when they are taking antibiotics for an infection?

Antibiotics reduce your bodies natural bacteria and can lead to regrowth of more dangerous bacteria. Yoghurt contains healthy bacteria to repopulate decimated populations making sure you stay well.

What are the differences between viruses and bacteria?

Bacteria: Bacteria can be killed by antibiotics. Bacteria is larger. Bacteria can reproduce from the life cycle. Viruses: Viruses cant be killed by antibiotics. Viruses are smaller than bacteria. Viruses cant reproduce without help from a host cell or organism.

How do you determine if an antibiotic is effective at stopping the growth of bacteria?

First, the lab tech needs to grow a culture of the bacteria on a medium (bacteria food) in a bunch of petri dishes. Each petri dish will contain millions of bacteria. Then, the tech puts a little of each antibiotic being tested on one of the bacteria samples. A different antibiotic is tested in each petri dish. She checks back later to see which antibiotic killed the most bacteria. She is looking for a bacteria-free area around where she put the drop of antibiotic. The technician writes a report for the doctor, to tell him which antibiotics worked the best. The doctor will check to see if you are allergic to an antibiotic before writing you a prescription. (You may want to remind him if you have any such allergies.)This is called a sensitivity test. If you take one kind of antibiotic and it doesn't work, be sure to ask your doctor to do a sensitivity test before you try any more types of antibiotic. If you just keep taking different antibiotics, your bacteria may become resistant to antibiotics. You could spread the resistant bacteria to other people. So insist on getting the test.
