Well, a certain percentage of it is needed by the body. There is a fat coating on every nerve, like insulation on a wire. If this breaks down the nerves will stop working. You also need some to insulate the body and to feed you in times of illness. But, after about 18% in men/25% percent in women you are looking at harmful effects like stress on the joints, excess cholesterol, risk of Diabetes and Heart disease, raised blood pressure and some studies say increased risk of depression.
Our bodies need fat because we need energy when we are not eating. Fat is stored as back up energy.
so that you have energy in your body
Fat is used to cushion certain organs, there are fat pads in your eye, on your butt etc. all to act as cushions. Fat is also necessary to store energy that hasn't been consumed for later.

  • Too much saturated fat can be bad but you still need some fat for your body to function. Just limit the amount.
  • There are good fats: Monounsaturated and Polyunsaturated, which do things like lower total cholesterol, are important for growth, development and they can regulate blood pressure. They also build cell membranes. However, there are also bad fats: Saturated and TRANS fats. Americans consume mainly these fats (which is one of the reason many Americans are overweight). Both saturated and trans fats are bad for you, especially trans fat. The body does not know how to digest trans fats so they just sit there. The bad fats clog arteries, cause high blood pressure, heart disease, and other health problems. Therefore, avoid them as often as possible.
