Basalt is an extrusive volcanic rock formed from the decompression melting of Earth’s mantle. It is expelled through volcanic eruption and it produced grey to black and fine grained rock. It may contain minerals and elements. Basalt is also formed in other planets and asteroids.

The rock basalt forms from the cooling and solidification of basaltic magma which is relatively high in iron and magnesium and relatively low in aluminum and silica when compared to andesitic and granitic magma.

They are both formed by the crystallisation of magma.

Basalt is formed when basic (i.e. high iron and magnesium, low silica) magma freezes above ground as a lava flow, resulting in the very fine crystals.

Granite is the crystallised form of more felsic (silica-rich) magma, which has crystallised at depth within the Earth, resulting in a large crystal size.

A basalt rock is formed from basaltic lava that is rapidly cooled. This process generally happens near the surface of a planet or moon, as these types of rocks are also found on various moons in the solar system.

Gabbro is an intrusive rock, which means it formed underground. Basalt is an extrusive rock, which means it formed above ground .

Where is basalt and gabbro formed?

Basalt and gabbro are chemically equivalent rocks. Basalt solidifies above ground and gabbro solidifies below ground.

What sedimentary rock turns into the igneous rock basalt?

None. Basalt is formed by the rapid cooling of mafic (silica-poor) magma. It is not formed from sedimentary rock.
