Decreases in biodiversity result in a loss of genetic variation. This affects the ecosystem in varying levels of severity. For example, if you lose a pack of wolves in the forest, in that group you lose a genetic line that can hunt well by scent, then the prey species of those wolves (such as rabbits) may increase, they will eat more vegetation, and drive out less successful herbivores from the forest.

Yes, generally speaking, a genetically diverse ecosystem will have a greater ability to return to its original state after being disturbed. Different species do better under different conditions, as the number of species increases the range of conditions that can be acceptable for survival increase, the species that survive will protect the community as a whole.

How can an increase in biodiversity lead to an increase in an ecosystem stability?

An increase in bio diversity leads to increases in ecosystem stability because it will cause a constant competition. With a lot more of each species that means there's more food and more stability will arise.

Why is biodiversity in animals important to us?

biodiversity prevents an ecosystem getting wiped out when a disaster strikes. the more diverse it is, the more survivors there are.

What are the function and benefits of biodiversity?

Biodiversity describes the different life forms found within an ecosystem. It is a measure of the health of an ecosystem and greater biodiversity implies greater health. See the related links for more information.
