well if you mean how does unemployment affect crime it is because everyone is out of a job so they cant feed their family and if they cant feed their family they cant feed themselves so they have only a couple options either crime, unemployment offices, (which i think doesnt do anything for American citizens) or they could apply for a job and hope for the best.
Also some people might think crime is a better option for financial gain and become involved in criminal activities rather than stay unemployed.
In times of high unemployment, crime can increase as some unemployed people may see this as the only option to put food on the table as it were. Turning to alcohol or drugs can come into it but both cost money and just make the whole situation much worse when what is needed is a clear head to look for opportunities to gain employment. If social security benefits are suspended, it could be seen as the only option. Conversely, if you turn to crime in unemployment and are caught and convicted, having a criminal record may well make it extremely difficult to gain employment in the future therefore making a bad situation many times worse. Better to concentrate on finding work, even if not in your own field of experience or paying as much as you would ideally like to earn. It is generally easier to move to a better paid or more fulfilling job when you are in employment, so even a temporary post should be seen as a stepping stone to where you want to be.
