They are inversely related. If people have jobs, then the crime rate goes down. But if people don't have jobs, the crime rate is higher. The reason because the criminals also have families they have to support but if they can't find a job they need money somehow and they do it illegally so that's about it.

we need to increase our police and other forms of justice and prevention
we lose money in the economy from drug-related crime
it makes people afraid and pushes more anti-theft, neighborhood watch, etc. programs....

Well, when people steal it is bad for the community. First, high crime rates reflect lower standards of living and if you are very extreme you can say that it would then lead to people not wanting to move in or invest in your country. But thinking more immediate and practical it is: Your stuff will get stolen and the community would be less trusting and more EVIL.
