In addition to chronic fatigue and weight loss, the Crohn's sufferer must make constant trips to the toilet without much prior notice; the patient is therefore reliant on quick access to facilities and does not enjoy a good quality of life until a flair up ends. Constant pain, cramping and no appetite render the patient housebound and often bedridden.

Crohns disease affects every patient differently.

Quality of life depends on the severity of your disease and your ability to cope with the symptoms.

Some issues.

Pain. Patients can experience severe debilitating pain from cramping, bloating, fissures around the anus can hinder movement.

Nutrition. Failure to properly absorb nutrients can make a patient weak, exhausted and listless.

Medication. Medication can change how one handles daily life. Some medicine will have side effects difficult to adjust to.

Frequency of bowel movements. Flares can produce continuous urges to defecate. Normal day to day activities can come to a halt when the urge to run to the toilet overwhelms everything. Simply going outside or on a short walk can be an issue.

A diagnosis of Crohns disease is often a life changing event for a young, otherwise healthy child or teen. Food and nutrition are essential for growth and when a disease such as Crohns interferes with that, normal development can be effected.

The pain of a flare can slow or stop social interactions and even schooling. Fatigue from poor absorption of nutrients can restrict activity. Psychological trauma from constant diarrhea and "accidental" defecation or fear of such accidents can cause social withdrawal.

The inflammation that occurs with Crohn's disease causes cells in the affected areas of your intestine to secrete large amounts of water and salt. Because the colon can't completely absorb this excess fluid, you develop diarrhea. Intensified intestinal cramping also can contribute to loose stools. Diarrhea is a common problem for people with Crohn's. Inflammation and ulceration will cause the inner wall portions of your bowel to swell and eventually thicken with scar tissue. This affects the normal movement of contents through your digestive tract and may lead to pain and cramping. Mild Crohn's disease usually causes slight to moderate intestinal discomfort, but in more-serious cases, the pain may be severely debilitating and include nausea and vomiting.
